Attack on fishermen

Rameswaram, Jan. 22 (PTI): Twelve fishermen were injured today when they were attacked allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy for fishing in their territorial waters, officials said.

Six hundred boats had ventured into several points within Lankan territorial waters following which the navy surrounded them and cut the nets of more than 10 vessels. The fishermen were reportedly asked to kneel down and beaten up before being released.

Braid snipped

Ghaziabad (PTI): A woman has lodged a harassment complaint against her husband after he allegedly cut off her braid because she did not cover her head, police said. Rukshana said her husband Israr also threw her out of the house. She alleged she was harassed ever since her marriage.

Model babu

Bhopal (PTI): The principal secretary of health and family welfare in Madhya Pradesh has got his mother operated for cataract at a government hospital to dispel the notion that the quality of health care at state-run hospitals is not up to the mark. Pravir Krishna said he hoped his decision encouraged others.

Student siege

Udhagamandalam (PTI): Almost all the 2,700 students of the Government Arts College on Tuesday laid a near siege of the district collectorate seeking withdrawal of a reported move to convert Stonehouse, the official residence of the principal, into a museum.

Tease thrash

Muzaffarnagar (PTI): A Class IX girl was allegedly beaten up for protesting against some youths who were teasing her at a school on Tuesday. The girl had slapped one of the accused, following which she was beaten up. The girl has filed a complaint against three youths, who are absconding.

Dolphin count

Bhubaneswar (PTI): The population of Irrawaddy dolphins has increased by 4.6 per cent. The chief executive of the Chilika Development Authority said the population was estimated to consist 118 adults, 16 sub-adults and 18 calves and neonates. The 2012 population estimation had shown 142 dolphins.

Flat rap on DDA

New Delhi, Jan. 22 (PTI): The Delhi Development Authority has been directed by a consumer commission to provide a flat to one of its allottees or pay him Rs 30 lakh within 30 days for selling the unit allotted to him to someone else.

The commission said the amount demanded by the authority from D.C. Sharma was “false and fictitious” as it was related to a flat that was “non-existent”.

Police post

Mumbai (PTI): Bombay High Court has directed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to decide within six weeks on an application filed by Mumbai police seeking regularisation of 125 illegal chowkies across the city.

Ramdev

New Delhi (PTI): Ramdev has told a Delhi court that he has no “grudge” against a man who had thrown ink on his face while he was addressing a news conference last year and said he did not want him to be punished.

School ‘molest’

Pune, Jan. 22 (PTI): The vice-principal of Don Bosco School, Yerwada, was arrested today for allegedly molesting a minor student.

Iju Francis Falkau, 54, had called the 14-year-old girl to his office on January 2 and molested her, police said. Members of several political parties protested today demanding strict action.

36hr concert

Pune (PTI): Classical singer Pandit Ramesh Narayan has given a marathon 36-hour concert on the premises of the Film and Television Institute of India. Narayan, a disciple of Pandit Jasraj, began the concert on January 19 and rendered all types of Hindustani classical music ragas.

Convict plea

Bangalore (PTI): A death row convict has moved Karnataka High Court seeking a stay on his execution citing a “delay” of nearly eight years by the President to decide on his mercy petition.

Koda aide detained

New Delhi, Jan. 22 (PTI): A businessman and a close associate of former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda has been detained in Indonesia following an Interpol notice against him on alleged money laundering charges.

The CBI had already informed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) about the detention and Anil Bastawade, 48, will now be brought to India. ED suspects Bastawade to have made illegal investments in several foreign countries for Koda.

Molester cop

Panaji (PTI): A constable was arrested for allegedly molesting a woman pretending to conduct a probe at her home in Mapusa, police said. Prashant Dawaskar and four civilians ransacked the woman’s house on Sunday midnight and molested her.

Indian bust

London (PTI): The UK government has permitted the erection of a bust of 12th century Indian social reformer Basaveshwara along the river Thames. Former mayor of Lambeth Neeraj Patil led the campaign for installation of the bust of Basaveshwara with two faces: one facing the Palace of Westminster and the other facing Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens.

Black bucks

Kanpur (PTI): Doctors worked through Monday night to finish the second post mortem of the 31 black bucks mauled by stray dogs at the Kanpur zoo. The report will be revealed by state forest department.

Student ire

Coimbatore (PTI): Nearly 400 students of a private college laid a near siege of a government hospital and a district collectorate office seeking immediate arrest of culprits responsible for “burning to death” a college student in Erode. The 19-year old girl’s charred body was found near Sivagiri and she was identified from a sim card lying next to the body, police said.

Oldest lady

Udhagamandalam (PTI): About 250 persons of a family of six generations will celebrate the 110th birthday of Rujjammal on Friday. She is believed to be the oldest woman in the Toda tribe of Pudumand in Tamil Nadu.
