Fire breaks out in ITC building

A fire broke out in a conference room at ITC Virginia House on Jawaharlal Nehru Road around 1.35pm on Tuesday. Four fire tenders doused the flames within an hour. “The fire originated from a conference room on the mezzanine floor of the building. The entire room was filled with smoke, sparking the panic. We managed to restrict the fire within the room,” said a fire department officer.

Man set on fire, dies

A resident of Beleghata died on Tuesday, after he was allegedly set on fire by his landlord and two others on Monday night. Sanjay Halder, 45, had been admitted to NRS hospital with 90 per cent burn injuries, police said. Halder said in his dying statement that his landlord, Abhijeet Chatterjee, and two others had set him on fire when he protested their drunk rowdyism outside his house. Police arrested Chatterjee.

Metro check

Metro Railway authorities have set up a special squad of women RPF officers to conduct surprise checks at all Metro stations and even trains on the move to prevent harassment of women passengers.

Burglary

Burglars broke into a three-storey house in Shibpur, Howrah, on Monday and fled with jewellery, cash and other valuables worth nearly Rs 20 lakh.

Prisoners in the six central correctional homes of the state will be issued Aadhar cards to check impersonation.

Hoax mail

A team from Haryana police visited a cyber café in Behala on Tuesday and seized the hard disk of a computer. A hotel in Gurgaon had received an e-mail threat, which was traced to the cyber café in Behala. lockade ongress supporters blocked Rashbehari Avenue, in front of Triangular Park, around 11.30am on Tuesday to protest some remarks made by chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The lifted the blockade after ten minutes. Another group of supporters tried to stage protest in front of Writers’ Buildings, where protests or gathering are prohibited. Twenty-four supporters were arrested.
