Chizoba nets the winner

Calcutta: Mohammedan Sporting’s start to the CFL Premier Division Super Nine turned out to be a disappointing one as Kalighat MS pipped them 1-0, here, at the Salt Lake Stadium, on Monday.

Striker Christopher Chizoba scored the winner nine minutes before regulation time. Having received a through pass, he left his marker dazed and slotted the ball home comfortably past the advancing Sporting ’keeper Somnath Khara.

Sporting, though, will have only themselves to blame as they squandered plenty of chances which came their way. The good work in the attacking-third by the likes of Jayanta Sen, Alfred Jaryan and Shin Hyojin led Sporting to have an upper hand over their opponents.

But poor execution let them down.

Sporting captain Alfred almost got one through, off a set-up from Hyojin, towards the end of the first session. But his left-footer couldn’t get the better of goalkeeper Sen, who parried it over the crossbar.

Alfred was in the thick of things again in the 64 th minute, but this time around as well, his side-volley was cleared to safety by a KMS defender, occupying a correct position close to the goalline.

In another development, the East Bengal-Southern Samity tie, which was scheduled on Tuesday, has been cancelled due to unavailability of adequate police force, an IFA release stated.
