Rs 8 lakh jewellery heist

Alipurduar, Jan. 21: An armed gang looted a jewellery shop in Gayerkata early this morning holding the caretaker at gunpoint and fled with gold and silver ornaments worth more than Rs 8 lakh.

A police source said owner Pradeep Das did not open his shop in the New Market area of Gayerkata yesterday as it was a Sunday.

“Caretaker Bapi would sleep inside the shop at night. Around 2am today, robbers broke the wooden door at the backside of the shop and entered. Three of them were carrying firearms and they held Bapi at gunpoint. With the help of gas cutters, the robbers opened the vault and took away the ornaments,” said the source.

Bapi raised the alarm and local people, including owner Pradeep Das, reached the shop. “Jewellery worth more than Rs 8 lakh has been stolen from my shop,” said Das.

Gayerkata is 73km from Alipurduar. James Kujur, the additional superintendent of police of Jalpaiguri, said: “We have started a probe and are interrogating the staff of the shop.”
