Left names bypoll candidates

Calcutta, Jan. 21: The Left Front today announced its candidates for the February 23 bypolls in three seats in Murshidabad, Malda and Birbhum.

The CPM, Forward Bloc and the RSP will be contesting the Englishbazar, Nalhati and Rejinagar Assembly seats, respectively.

The CPM has fielded Kaushik Mishra, a new candidate, for Englishbazar.

The Bloc’s Dipak Chatterjee and the RSP’s Sirajul Islam Mondal will be contesting from Nalhati and Rejinagar.

“Our Front partners decided to stick to the seats from where they had contested the last 2011 Assembly elections. There was unanimity in our choice of candidates,” CPM state secretary Biman Bose said at Alimuddin Street today.

The Nalhati seat fell vacant after Congress MLA and President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee was elected in the Jangipur Lok Sabha election.

As for Englishbazar and Rejinagar, Congress MLAs Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury and Humayan Kabir switched over to Trinamul and were made ministers by chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
