AASU protest

Dibrugarh, Jan. 21: AASU staged a dharna at Dibrugarh railway workshop today to protest against the appointment of 72 people from outside the state in C and D category posts of the railways at Dibrugarh. The AJYCP has also called a strike on January 27 and 28. Ranjan Babumia, AASU, demanded 100 per cent recruitment of persons of the Northeast for jobs in these two categories.

Cremated

Guwahati: Former principal chief conservator of forest, Durga Prasad Neog, who passed away on Sunday at his Lachit Nagar residence in Guwahati, was cremated at Jagiroad in Morigaon district on Monday afternoon.

Logs seized

Kokrajhar: Sal logs worth over Rs 3 lakh along with a modified motorbike van were seized from Kutpara at Chitila under Fakiragram police station in Kokrajhar on Monday.

2 arrested

Nagaon: Police on Monday arrested two persons, Nuruddin and Jakir Hussain, from Boghat. They were carrying a rhino horn from Dhung to Doboka in a car.

Body found

Golaghat: The body of Ratneswar Saikia of Morongi Sargaon was fished out from Shankar Beel on Monday. Ratnes-war was missing from Sunday evening.

Silchar: The 20th foundation day of the Assam Central University on its Dargakona campus was observed on Monday.

Jumbo attack

Dhubri: Gulenur Begum, 28 and Gulap Hussain, 30 were injured when an elephant attacked them at Borjhara of Dhubri district on Sunday night.

Official visit

Guwahati: The commissioner of hills and Barak Valley division, Assam, M. Ariz Ahammed, will visit the districts of Barak Valley to review law and order and panchayat election preparedness on Thursday and Friday.
