Kamal Bose dies

Former city mayor Kamal Kumar Bose passed away at a nursing home in Calcutta on Monday. He was 94 and is survived by his son. Bose served as mayor from 1985 to 1990 and is best remembered for the construction of the Salt Lake stadium and reconstruction of the fire-ravaged New Market. Bose, a barrister, was elected MP on a ticket of the undivided Communist Party in 1952. After the party split in 1964, he joined the CPM. He was also a trustee of Mohun Bagan club.

New terminal

Air India’s London flight via Delhi on Wednesday will be the first one to operate from the new integrated terminal of Calcutta airport. The 10am flight will operate from the new terminal only on that day.

Arrest

Four youths, all in their twenties, were arrested during a nightlong raid early on Monday in connection with the lynching of a woman in Topsia on January 1. Imran Khan, Jamil Khan, Sheikh Manvar and Shahnawaz Alam, all residents of Tiljala police station area, were arrested on charges of murder.

Wife set on fire

Shilpi Gharai, 34, a resident of Ukil Para in Sonarpur, was allegedly set on fire by her husband early on Monday. She was admitted to M. R. Bangur hospital with 80 per cent burn injuries. The husband, who is an autorickshaw driver, used to torture Shilpi demanding more dowry since their marriage, police said.
