The mutilated and decomposed body of an unidentified youth was found buried in a slag dump near Sunsunia Gate in Burmamines police station area of Jamshedpur on Sunday morning.
Police have sent it to MGM Medical College for post-mortem. Since the body has decomposed beyond recognition, the victim’s jeans, shirt and belt have been kept aside for identification.
Sub-inspector Sanjiv Kumar Mishra of Burmamines police station said a local resident informed him about foul smell at the slag dump, barely 300 metres from the busy Sakchi-Burmamines Road.
A police team searched the mound and found the corpse with dismembered limbs. “From the condition of the body, which had almost turned into a skeleton, it seems the murder took take place at least a week ago,” Mishra said.
City SP Ajay Linda, who is supervising investigations, however, said it might be a case of mishap too. “Maybe, the youth met with an accident while dumping slag. He got buried and died. But, we are not ruling out murder either,” the senior officer said.
Linda added that they had kept the body at the MGM morgue, hoping that someone would identify the deceased after seeing the jeans and shirt. “If it is a case of murder, we will be able to crack it only if the body is identified. We also need to know whether a missing report was lodged.”
Incidentally, Sunsunia is a haunt of criminals. Two months ago, a gang had robbed a Calcutta businessman here.
