25 injured in Paradip clash

Paradip, Jan. 19: At least 25 persons, including some security personnel, were injured today at the oil refinery project site near Paradip in a clash following the death of a labourer under mysterious circumstances.

The incident comes a day after irate workers at the Tata Steel plant site in Kalinga Nagar of Jajpur had turned violent following the death of a casual worker in a mishap.

Sources at the oil refinery project site said trouble ensued as over 200 labourers and local villagers had tried to force their way into the prohibited complex. When the Central Industrial Security Force personnel stopped them from entering the site, the mob pelted stones. The security personnel have retaliated by lathicharge, police said.

The injured included five security force personnel. The mob vandalised the security shed and the company office near the project entry gate.

The body of Sanjay Patra, a local from the neighbouring Trilochanpur village, was found hanging on the stairway of a container tank in the refinery complex. As the labourers saw the body, they smelt foul play and suspected it to be case of murder. This led to commotion at the site.

Work at the Rs 30,000-crore project site was suspended for the day. As tension still prevails there, armed police have been deployed there.

“We have registered two cases in connection with the recovery of body and today’s violence,” said inspector of Bijoychabdrapur police station Gupteswar Bhoi.
