New Delhi, Jan 19: After serving nearly two years as acting chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), controversial academician Ved Prakash was today appointed the actual chairperson of the higher education regulator.
The appointments committee of cabinet (ACC) has cleared Prakash’s name for the top post after the Union HRD ministry backed him, The Telegraph has learnt.
UGC did not have a regular chairperson since February 6, 2011, after Sukhadeo Thorat ended his tenure. Since then, Prakash, who was vice chairperson, has been serving as the acting chairperson.
The HRD ministry had initiated the process of the appointment in 2011 by setting a search committee under Govardhan Mehta.
HRD minister M.M. Pallam Raju is learnt to have preferred Prakash to other candidates.
Prakash said that he would concentrate on providing quality education in higher educational institutions in the country.
