Calcutta, Jan. 19: Trinamul leader Arabul Islam was today shifted to SSKM from MR Bangur Hospital.
Doctors at SSKM said several tests had been conducted and his condition was stable.
Arabul, arrested on Thursday on charges of attempt to murder and assault, had been admitted to MR Bangur last night after he complained of chest pain.
Today, doctors referred him to SSKM. He has been kept under observation in the ICU.
“Other than blood tests, an ECG and an echocardiogram were conducted. There are some irregularities in the parameters but these are not alarming. A medical board will be formed on Monday. It will take a call on his condition,” said Tamal Kanti Ghosh, the medical superintendent of SSKM.
Hospital sources said Arabul suffered from hypertension and diabetes.
Sources at Sonarpur police station, where the Bhangar Trinamul leader was kept after his arrest, said Arabul complained of chest pain around 10.30pm last night.
“He was absolutely normal throughout the day. Dinner was served around 9pm. He had roti and sabji,” an officer said.
CPM leaders expressed surprise at Arabul, who was “hale and hearty” throughout the day, suddenly complaining of chest pain.
Sujan Chakrabarty, the CPM’s South 24-Parganas secretary, said: “This is a ploy to avoid being interrogated. The contrast with the way our MLA Sushanta Ghosh was treated in jail is striking.”
