Calcutta, Jan. 19: CPM general secretary Prakash Karat today said Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamul government were patronising and encouraging attacks on Left leaders and cadres in the run-up to the panchayat elections.
“Since the 2011 elections, 85 members and supporters of the CPM have been killed. The chief minister and the TMC government are encouraging such attacks. They are resorting to intimidation of our partymen as the panchayat polls are approaching,” Karat said at a news conference at Alimuddin Street after the three-day central committee meeting ended today.
Referring to the alleged Trinamul attack on veteran leader Abdur Rezzak Mollah, the CPM general secretary said: “Such a senior leader of the party and a former minister was attacked by Trinamul men. That betrays the scenario of violence that has gripped Bengal under Trinamul rule.”
“The central committee heard a report (by the state committee) on the activities and movements conducted by the CPM in this state. We were also told about the attacks. Interestingly, more and more men are feeling encouraged and joining our rallies to protest against the attacks,” he added.
