Gold theft

Malda, Jan. 17: The NH34 and NH81 was blocked for six hours from 8am today by shopowners to protest police inaction after a jewellery shop in Gajole’s Bus Stand More was robbed of gold and diamond ornaments worth Rs 1 crore.

The shop, owned by Pranab Karmakar, is located in a busy area and the Gajole police station is barely 300 metres from the spot. Pranab has gone to Calcutta for some work.

“I found the steel shutters behind the shop twisted. The shop was ransacked and about 300 grams of gold ornaments and diamonds kept in a safe was broken into. They are worth nearly Rs 1 crore,” said Bablu Karmakar, the owner’s father-in-law.

“The thieves had come in a vehicle and had left the shop after the robbery and gone towards Raiganj,” said Siddhartha Dorji, the deputy police superintendent.
