Khurshid report

Lucknow (PTI): The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court today sought a report from the economic offences wing of Uttar Pradesh police on investigations into alleged irregularities in the Dr Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust run by Union minister Salman Khurshid and his wife, Louise.

The order was passed on a PIL seeking direction for lodging an FIR in the case and monitoring by the court.

IT official

New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court has ordered an income tax commissioner to get psychological tests done for making “scurrilous” statements against his women colleagues. The court has asked S.K. Srivastava to be admitted to hospital within two days.

Zee plea

New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court has dismissed Zee News’s plea for direction to the CBI to lodge an FIR against Congress MP Naveen Jindal for allegedly trying to “influence” a hearing in connection with a purported extortion bid.

Nun case

Kochi (PTI): Kerala High court on Wednesday stayed the trial in the Sister Abhaya murder case on a petition seeking further investigation. The 19-year-old nun’s death in a Kottayam convent in 1992 was initially thought to be a suicide, but a CBI probe found she had been murdered. A CBI special court was holding the trial.

MLA sacked

Shimla: Doon MLA, Ram Kumar Chaudhary has been suspended from the Congress for alleged involvement in a murder case. State Congress president S.S. Sukhu said the party will not tolerate any indiscipline and will act tough with those sullying the image of the party.

AMU polls

Aligarh (PTI): Aligarh Muslim University has announced that student elections will be held on January 31 in line with the Lyngdoh committee recommendations. An official said only bona-fide students who fulfll age guidelines will be permitted to contest the elections.

100ft leap

Washington, Jan. 16 (PTI): An Indian-American jumped into a 100ft mineshaft at a meteor impact site in Arizona to “appease the gods” before being pulled out following a massive eight-hour rescue operation.

Parminder Singh, 28, who travelled from California to Arizona, jumped feet-first into the mineshaft on January 11, witnesses said. He was transported to a medical centre where he is listed in stable condition.

Hospital fined

New Delhi (PTI): The apex consumer forum has directed a Hyderabad hospital to pay a compensation of Rs 2.05 lakh to the widow of a patient who died suddenly of a heart attack while being treated for a shoulder injury. It said the hospital has not been able to explain what caused G. Ramakistaiah’s death.

Leopard body

Yavatmal (PTI): A leopard carcass was found by villagers in the forest of Belona in Maharashtra on Tuesday. The villagers suspected that the leopard died after being poisoned. The carcass has been sent for a post-mortem. There was no evidence of poaching, a forest official said.

Safety rules

Panaji (PTI): The Goa education department on Wednesday said they would draft guidelines for the safety of students in schools in the wake of the sexual abuse of a seven-year-old girl inside the school toilet on Monday.

Boy suicide

Salem (PTI): A third-year engineering student has allegedly committed suicide after being asked by his parents why he couldn’t speak fluent English. The 23-year-old had come home for Pongal from Coimbatore where he was studying. He locked himself in a room and consumed poison after having the conversation with his parents, police said.

MLA custody

Adilabad (PTI): Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, who was arrested for an alleged hate speech, was on Wednesday sent to judicial custody, a day before the completion of his five-day police custody. He was produced before a court on Wednesday and sent to jail till January 22.
