Medical council

The high court on Wednesday asked the state medical council to elect a new executive body within six months. The division bench of Chief Justice A.K. Mishra and Justice Joymalya Bagchi passed the order on a petition moved by NRI doctor Kunal Saha, challenging the authority of the existing ad hoc body. Saha has submitted that the election had been pending since 2010.

Eight held

Eight persons have been arrested for rioting, causing mischief and stopping government officials from discharging their duties in Ekbalpore on Tuesday night. A 5,000-strong mob had blocked a road and tried to attack a woman in Rajab Ali Lane suspecting her to be a child lifter. Police rescued the woman.

Arrested

Raja Sarkar, 32, has been arrested for allegedly robbing Class XI student Saptarshi Roy Choudhury of a gold ring near Ruby hospital on Tuesday. Police said Sarkar had earlier been arrested on a similar charge and come out of judicial custody a fortnight ago.

Suicide

A government employee apparently committed suicide by jumping off the New Secretariat building on Wednesday afternoon. Police said Kishore Kumar Saha, 52, had been depressed since the death of his wife six months ago.
