‘Juvenile’ accused

New Delhi, Jan. 15: The Juvenile Justice Board today refrained from taking a call on the correct age of one of the bus rape accused who claims to be a minor.

The principal of the Uttar Pradesh school where the accused once studied appeared before the board in camera for the second time today and furnished a photocopy of the school admission register. Sources said the register showed the accused as an under-18.

Scientists

New Delhi (PTI): Four scientists, who played a key role in negotiating the Indo-US nuclear deal, were conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Awards by the department of atomic energy on Tuesday. Ravi Bhushan Grover, K. Balaramamoorthy, R. Balasubramanian and S.K. Sikka were honoured by the Prime Minister.

Cop ‘slapped’

Thane (PTI): A motorcyclist allegedly slapped a woman sub-inspector when she questioned him for rash driving after he hit her bike while she was returning home from duty at 12.30am on Tuesday. The youth identified as Sanjay Joshi has been arrested.

‘Killer’ jawan

Amritsar (PTI): A BSF jawan allegedly shot his colleague with his service weapon before killing himself when the two were on patrolling duty on the Indo-Pak border on Monday night.

Jindal probe

New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court has asked police to investigate the defamation complaint filed against Congress MP Naveen Jindal and 16 others by Zee News editor Sudhir Chaudhary. Chaudhary had alleged that “false allegations” were levelled against him.

MLA confesses

Shimla, Jan.15: Congress MLA from Doon Ram Kumar Chaudhary, arrested on charges of a girl’s murder, has reportedly confessed his involvement in her murder.

Chaudhary told police that Jyoti Devi was first beaten up by him and his three accomplices, who are hiding in Calcutta, inside his car and then thrown out. Another accused Tilak Raj tried to crush her head under a truck.

Death penalty

New Delhi (PTI): A 60-year-old farmhouse guard was awarded death penalty by a Delhi court on Tuesday for raping and killing a three-year-old girl two years ago. The judge termed the offence as “rarest of rare” while sentencing Bharat Singh for raping the minor, who died during the commission of the crime.

Rap for cop

Nashik (PTI): A police inspector was suspended for reportedly not acting on a harassment complaint by a woman against two persons after which she committed suicide, police said on Tuesday. Nirmala Bhaskar Shinde, 43-year-old widow, had alleged in her complaint that two unidentified persons used to harass her, police said.

Realty bill

New Delhi: Real estate bill will be introduced at the budget session this year. The bill was presented to cabinet in October but was deferred by urban development minister Kamal Nath as his ministry was not consulted.

Sculptor dead

Ahmedabad (PTI): Sculptor Jasu Shilpi, popularly known as “The bronze woman of India”, passed away on Monday night following a cardiac arrest. Shilpi, 64, had national and international awards to her name. Shilpi made it to the “Limca Book of Record” in 2005 for her statue of Rani Laxmibai.

Owaisi tape

Hyderabad: Police have decided to seek support of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Chandigarh, to decipher the alleged hate speech of MIM’s legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi. The police want the CFSL to conduct the voice analysis facilities after Owaisi claimed the tape was doctored.
