Cong slams ‘10-for-1’ statement

New Delhi, Jan. 15: The Congress today strongly condemned Sushma Swaraj’s “10-for-1-head” remark even as the Centre cautioned against jingoism at this stage.

Information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari, who is the government’s official spokesperson, tweeted: “Professional Armies respect rules of engagement. Transgressions are surmounted through tactical responses and not driven by jingoism.”

His response came a day after BJP leader Sushma said if Pakistan does not return the head of martyred soldier Hem Raj, India should get at least 10 heads from the other side.

Tewari said: “There is absolutely no doubtů that the entire country is outraged about the inhuman manner in which our armed forces personnel have been treated. The government has responded to it by not only expressing its outrage but by defining it as some sort of a turning point.”

Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi added: “It is very unfortunate. It is not proper to give this kind of a statement and the BJP should not do politics on such a sensitive issue.”

Asked if the Congress anticipated a Kargil-like conflict in the next few days, he said: “No one can say what will happen in the future. Our army is ready to face all kinds of situations. But we do not want war and want friendship.”
