Student robbed

A Class XI student was robbed of his gold ring near a crowded bus stand outside Ruby General Hospital on the EM Bypass on Monday evening. aptarshi Roy Choudhury, 17, said in his police complaint that he was too scared to shout for help when a stranger who had started talking to him minutes before at the bus stand threatened to shoot him and his family members if he did not hand over his gold ring, worth more than Rs 30,000. Saptarshi was on his way to Garia to attend a tuition class. He was waiting for a bus near the Ruby crossing around 5.30pm, when the man, who appeared to be in his early-30s, approached him,” said the boy’s uncle, Riten Roy Choudhury. We are trying to draw a sketch of the accused,” said a senior officer of the detective department.

Theft

A 27-year-old man was arrested for stealing a passenger’s phone from a bus on the Bypass on Tuesday morning. Police said Patuli resident Sumon Ghosh chased Sheikh Kalua from Ajaynagar to the Abhishikta crossing before a constable nabbed him. The phone was recovered.

Woman assaulted

A woman in her 30s was beaten up by residents of Ekbalpore on suspicion of trying to lift a child on Tuesday. Police said the mob turned violent after they found medicine strips, which they thought were sedatives, in a packet she was carrying. Police rescued the woman but around 5,000 local residents blocked the road, preventing them from going to the police station. The woman was kept in the safety of house as police stood guard, awaiting the Rapid Action Force. The woman was later taken to Ekbalpore police station.

Two arrested

Mohammed Firoz Alam, 32, was arrested on Monday night in connection with the lynching of Mohammed Altamas, 35, in Narkeldanga on Thursday. Two men — Pervez Alam and Mohammed Imtiaz — were held in Entally in connection with the assault of a man in Entally on January 6 on suspicion that he was a child snatcher.

Airport

Entry of visitors to the airport terminals has been barred till January 31 because of Republic Day security.
