Suicide rap for officer

- Fresh probe in lady death

Bhagalpur/Patna, Jan. 15: Bhagalpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) K.S. Anupams statement that the woman, who went missing from Brahmaputra Mail and was found hanging from a tree, had committed suicide has earned the officer flak from her superiors.

The 40-year-old woman from Bengals Jalpaiguri district, on her way to New Delhi, went missing on January 12 between Vikramshila and Kahalgaon railway stations in Bhagalpur district. Her semi-nude body was found on January 13 from a mango orchard under Kahalgaon police station in Bhagalpur.

Deputy inspector-general of police (Bhagalpur range) Amit Kumar Jain, who yesterday visited the site from where the womans body was found, ordered a fresh probe into the incident. He asked the SSP to conduct a thorough investigation in the wake of the contention of the victims relatives that she was murdered and had not committed suicide, as claimed by the police.

The case requires a thorough investigation and it should be based on scientific evidences, Jain told the SSP, who had yesterday said it appeared that the woman had committed suicide. She referred to the post-mortem report, which suggested that strangulation led to the victims death.
