Fair harvest of Tusu fun

This is the only time of the year when rural youngsters are heard saying “my chaural is better than yours”.

Tusu or Makar Sankranti fairs on Monday in and around Jamshedpur were abuzz with harvest season revelry.

The one near the confluence of the two biggest rivers Subernarekha and Kharkai, organised by Jharkhand Sanskritik Kala Kendra at Domuhani, Sonari, drew thousands for its chaural (bamboo structure worshipped as a symbol of prosperity and happiness) and Tusu idol contests.

Around 20 chaurals this year vied for cash prizes from the outfit. Participants include those from other blocks as well as villages on Bengal and Odisha borders.

Politicians such as Champai Soren, Ramdas Soren and Mohan Karmakar — the latter is also the president of Jharkhand Sanskritik Kala Kendra — also made their presence felt, tapping their feet to tribal percussion instruments.

“This is the harvest season when we forget everything and tap our feet to the rhythm of madal. Without music and dance, there can be no Makar Sankranti celebrations. We are organising this fair since many years. Our enthusiasm is unflagging,” said Karmakar.

Jharkhand Sanskritik Kala Rang Manch, Bhuiyandih, celebrated Tusu festival with a sprawling fair.

Village tourism development committee members of Aamadubi in Dalbhumgarh block, 40 km from the city, also celebrated the festival with a daylong festival of food, culture and painting.

Aamadubi, poised to become one of the first rural tourism sites of Jharkhand, is an incomplete project due to funds crunch.
