Teacher found murdered

A 55-year-old schoolteacher who lived alone was found murdered in her Budge Budge home on Monday morning. Leela Ghorai’s domestic help entered the house to find her sitting in a chair with her head on the dinning table. There was a deep wound on the back of her head that suggested she had been hit fatally with a blunt object.

“The murder motive is yet to be ascertained with nothing reported stolen from the house,” said an officer of Budge Budge police station.

According to police, Leela’s husband has been missing for two years. “She had been living with her mother, who died last week. Leela’s only daughter, Sumi Jana, a postgraduate student at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, married three years ago,” said the officer. Leela used to teach at Sarada Vidyapith in Budge Budge.

The help came to her house around 7am. “She pressed the doorbell repeatedly but there was no response. She then found the door was not locked from inside and pushed it open. On seeing Leela slumped over the dining table, the help raised the alarm,” added the officer.

The investigators believe the teacher was murdered around Sunday midnight but are yet to trace the weapon.

“There was no mark of forcible entry on the main door, so we can rule out a break-in. It appears the victim knew the assassin,” said an investigator. The almirah in the house was locked. Nothing seemed out of place in the two bedrooms.

Molestation case

Police on Monday wrote to Amit Sarkar, the secretary of Rajabazar Science College, seeking details of the student who had allegedly been molested in a bus on Thursday. Police said they had still not received any statement from the girl and could not proceed with the case without it. The molestation complaint was lodged by Sarkar and not the student.
