Traders robbed

Kharagpur, Jan. 14: A gang of 15 youths in Kharagpur looted cash and jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh from a family of traders who alleged that repeated calls to the police toll-free number went unanswered.

Biswanath Adhikari, the eldest of five brothers who deal in paddy, said he had dialled 100 four times when the gang raided their Khardanga home at 2am, but got no response. The police cited technical glitch.

Burdwan: A murder accused out on bail was on Monday hacked to death in a Burdwan market by three youths on a bike.

City fire

Calcutta: A cellphone tower on a private boys hostel near MG Road Metro station caught fire at 9.40pm on Monday. Three fire engines doused the flames within an hour. No body was injured.
