Calcutta: Coach Trevor James Morgan was a relieved man after Kingfisher East Bengal defeated Mumbai FC 2-0 in an I-League tie at the Kalyani Stadium, on Sunday.
While striker Edeh Chidi gave East Bengal the lead, it was Lalrindika Ralte’s 53rd minute brilliance that sealed the issue for the red-and-gold brigade. Ralte’s goal turned out to be the highlight of the game as he found the target with a terrific long-ranger.
Prior to the match, Morgan had admitted that East Bengal were under pressure and were desperate for a win.
The script demanded the players, particularly the strikers, to perform on Sunday. And they responded brilliantly, showing the enterprise to win the match.
Not only did the win bring home three points and helped East Bengal move to the second place in the standings with 30 points from 15 matches, it also gave them the necessary confidence ahead of their crucial match against leaders Churchill Brothers on Saturday.
Speaking about the result, Morgan said: “After losing against ONGC, we needed to make a comeback. It was a crucial victory… Had we not won the match, it would have been difficult to stay in pursuit of Churchill and stay ahead of Dempo and other teams.
“This phase will be very interesting… There will be numerous upsets and surprises… We need to be on guard. I think we need a minimum of seven wins from nine matches if we want to win the title.”
