Toxin-free stress at river fest

Ranchi NGO Yugantar Bharti on Sunday hosted Swarnarekha Mahotsav at Domuhani, Jamshedpur, the confluence of Subernarekha and Kharkai.

Former BJP ideologue K.N. Govindacharya and former BJP legislator Sarayu Roy, RSS chief (Bihar and Jharkhand) Siddnath Singh, environmentalists and others were present. This is the eighth edition of the annual mahotsav.

Govindacharya, in his address, stressed on the need to make Ganga and other rivers pollution-free for which he advocated a mass programme.

He also hailed Yugantar Bharti for creating mass awareness to conserve rivers.

BJP veteran Roy said Jamshedpur was an example of how rivers helped civilisations prosper.

“This town has come up on the bank of rivers. If water bodies dry up, civilisation will cease to exist,” said Roy.

Other functionaries said the importance of protecting rivers should be instilled in children. “Incorporating the issue in the education system, will do the trick,” said Subodh Srivastava, mahotsav convener.

“If attention is given to protect rivers, many ecological risks can be ironed out,” said environment expert Mansoor Ali. Another green expert Dinesh Mishra said small steps like not washing clothes in the river had a big positive impact.
