A gang of four allegedly barged into a house in the port area being guarded by two cops and shot two men on Sunday morning. While fleeing the gang exploded four bombs, which prompted the cops, too, to take to their heels.
An inquiry has been ordered against the two sub-inspectors of Rajabagan police station following a complaint against them.
The deputy commissioner of police, port, V. Solomon said he had heard the allegation that the cops had fled, instead of trying to catch the culprits, after the explosions. “An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the role of the policemen who were present at the spot,” he said.
Trouble started around 10.30am when workers hired by Nausad Ali, in his 50s, started building a wall around a six-cottah plot he had taken on lease in the Panchpara area of Rajabagan, under the port division of Calcutta police.
“Naushad has an old dispute with Rashid, another resident of the area. Rashid wanted to grab the plot which Naushad had taken on lease from owner Mohammad Kalimuddin,” said an officer of Rajabagan police station.
Soon after the workers started erecting the wall, Rashid’s men came and threatened Naushad and his son Moidul Islam, 22. As soon as they left the area, Naushad alerted the police, fearing an attack from Rashid’s group.
A police jeep with two sub-inspectors soon reached the spot.
“The jeep was parked beside the road and the sub-inspectors were roaming around near it. Suddenly, four youths on two motorcycles arrived and barged into Naushad’s house, adjacent to the plot that is at the centre of a row between him and Rashid. The cops were standing barely 100 metres away but they did nothing,” said a witness.
“One of the gang members took out a firearm and shot at Moidul. But the bullet got lodged in Naushad’s abdomen. The attacker fired again and this time the bullet hit Moidul in his right abdomen.”
While fleeing, the attackers hurled four bombs to scare the policemen. “The cops ran towards their jeep that immediately took a U-turn and sped away,” the witness said.
Residents, however, managed to catch one of the attackers, identified as Bablu, and dragged him to Rajabagan police station.
An FIR has been lodged against eight men.
Naushad and Moidul have been admitted to a nursing home in Ekbalpore.
