Guwahati, Jan. 12: The BJP’s Assam unit today staged a dharna at its district office here to protest the brutal killing of two Indian soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir, and demand strong action from the Centre to tackle the situation.
The party’s state unit president, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Lok Sabha MP from Guwahati Bijoya Chakraborty, led the protest.
Sonowal, who has recently been made the party’s state unit president, said the UPA government at the Centre was not initiating strong steps to counter the situation. “A soldier works hard and risks his life for the safety of the country. It is surprising to see that the government is not registering a strong protest even after two soldiers have been killed. We strongly condemn the incident and demand strong steps from the UPA-led government,” Sonowal said.
On Tuesday, two Indian soldiers were killed along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. One of them was beheaded. Today, around 100 BJP members shouted slogans against the barbaric act committed by Pakistani soldiers.
Lok Sabha MP from Guwahati) Bijoya Chakraborty said the party leadership had already started protest programmes across the country.
Senior BJP leaders in Delhi had demanded calling back the Indian High commissioner from Pakistan and asked the Centre to strongly take up the issue with the neighbouring country.
“Today’s dharna was part of our countrywide protests against the incident,” a state BJP leader said.
