Calcutta, Jan. 12: Six youths who were dragged to Lalbazar by passers-by on Wednesday for allegedly molesting a girl in central Calcutta were finally arrested last night, after being initially let off.
The six were picked up from the port division area after Satadru Roy, a youth who with the help of a friend and another passer-by had taken them to Lalbazar, lodged a written complaint of assault and molestation at Hare Street police station.
The police had let off the six on Wednesday citing the absence of a written complaint. Asked today why the youths had been allowed to go earlier, an officer said: “They were booked under bailable sections.”
Satadru, 28, had come forward to help the girl near Bankshall court when he saw two youths “disturbing” her.
Along with friend Uttam Bagchi and passer-by Samir Roy, Satadru had managed to drag the two youths and four others who had come to their help to Lalbazar.
But an officer of Hare Street police station who was called to Lalbazar had misbehaved with him, Satadru had alleged, making him feel like he had committed a crime.
