Brave student thwarts rape bid

- Administration to reward 15-year-old for teaching tormentor lesson

A Class VIII student of a government middle school in Madhepura would be rewarded on Republic Day for teaching a hard lesson to a youth, who attempted to outrage her modesty in her house under Udakisunganj police station late on Thursday night.

Madhepura superintendent of police (SP) Saurabh Kumar Sah said the 15-year-old girl would be rewarded by the district authorities on January 26 for showing exemplary courage.

“At a time when the entire nation is disturbed over the Delhi gang rape, the girl belonging to an extremely backward section of the society has set an example not only by teaching her tormentor a lesson but successfully resisting the rape bid,” the SP told The Telegraph over phone from Madhepura.

The girl attacked the accused, Pawan Kumar Mukhiya, with a gadasa (sharp-edged weapon used for cutting grass) to resist his advances.

The accused suffered grievous injuries on head, in back and thighs.

The 19-year-old accused is battling for life at Udakisunganj primary health centre. The doctor attending to him said he was “critical”.

Udakisunganj police station house officer Suresh Ram said the accused barged into the girl’s house around 10pm on Thursday finding her alone. He caught hold of her and tried to outrage her modesty, he said.

The girl told the police that she had kept a gadasa beside her bed as she had noticed some unusual activities outside her house late on Wednesday night.

She said she attacked the accused as soon as he made an unsuccessful bid to rape her.

“I whipped out the traditional weapon and slashed his head with it. When he tried to escape, I chased him down and again attacked him with the weapon. Thereafter, he fell on the ground,” she told the investigating officer.

On hearing the alarm raised by the victim, her neighbours rushed to her house and found the molester lying in a pool of blood.

They informed the officials posted at Udakisunganj police station about the incident. Subsequently, the accused was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Madhepura SP Sah said the girl’s mother had gone to a neighbouring village to look after her eldest daughter, who is expecting.

“Perhaps the accused of the same village came to know that the girl was alone and entered her house with ulterior motives,” he said.

He said a case had been lodged with Udakisunganj police station on the basis of the girl’s statement .

The accused was undergoing treatment under police custody, he said.

The accused, Mukhiya, claimed that he had been dragged into a false case as his family had an old dispute with that of the complainant. “I have been framed,” he told the police.

While the 15-year-gold of Madhepura managed to counter-attack her tormentor, a 13-year-old girl of Rohtas was allegedly gangraped by five youths at Nadauwa village under Natwar police on Thursday evening.

The girl, a student of class VI, was found unconscious on the outskirts of the village. She was attacked by the youths when she had gone to purchase eggs from a shop around 6pm.

On getting information, Rohtas SP Manu Maharaj rushed to the village. The victim was sent to the referral hospital at Dhangai for medical examination.

The SP said the police had not yet received the medical report. “But the girl was assaulted and efforts are on to apprehend the youths,” he told The Telegraph.
