Cultural fest at tourism mart

Jan. 10: The state cultural affairs department will showcase the rich cultural elements of the state for delegates of 10 Asean nations, who will participate in the three-day International Tourism Mart, 2013, beginning January 18. During the event, the department will organise cultural programmes on all days with select artistes.

“On the first day, Madhurima Barua and Jina Rajkumari will present dances of various indigenous communities at a cultural evening. A fashion show will also be organised to showcase the traditional attire of the communities,” said an official of the cultural affairs department.

He said the cultural programmes on the second day would be organised in a grand manner. “Altogether 100 artistes of Barpeta Xatra will perform bhortaal nritya. Artistes from all eight states of the Northeast will perform in front of the delegates,” said the official.

The artistes participating at the programme include Lou Majaw from Shillong, Mami Varte from Mizoram, Debojit Saha, Manas Robin and Mousam Gogoi from Assam. A rally will also be organised with 450 artistes to showcase the cultural elements.

“We are trying our best so that the rich cultural elements of the region can be showcased in front of the international guests and subsequently attract tourists from other countries,” he said.

The mart will be organised to highlight the tourism potential of the region by the Union ministry of tourism. Tourism ministers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, US, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, along with executive heads of the tourism authorities of the nations are expected to take part.

Sources said the state government would also organise a technical visit on January 21 to Pobitora wildlife sanctuary for all the delegates.

The event is expected to bring together the business fraternity and entrepreneurs behind the tourism products and services of the region through meetings between buyers, sellers, media, government agencies and others.
