Sobhandeb names ‘attacker’

Trinamul MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay has named in writing party colleague Manmatha Ranjan Biswas, supporter of a rival faction, as having assaulted him on the College Street campus of Calcutta University on November 27, university sources said.

Arup Ray, an aide of the Rashbehari MLA, handed over the statement to deputy registrar Sujit Kumar Barua on Thursday evening following a notification by the university seeking submissions on the clash between two factions of a Trinamul-backed staff association in front of the vice-chancellor’s room.

The MLA’s statement will be examined by a two-member probe committee.

Union members loyal to Dola Sen, Chattopadhyay’s rival in Trinamul’s labour wing INTTUC, had allegedly grabbed the MLA by the collar and pushed him when he went to attend a meeting of his supporters. Soon after the attack, Chattopadhyay had said: “A Trinamuli, Manmatha Ranjan Biswas, who was leading a group of goons, tried to pull me by my collar and then pushed me.”
