Ranchi, Jan. 9: The first-ever operating committee meeting on environment in India kicked off at RDCIS, SAIL, today with 35 delegates from various steel companies gracing the event.
The two-day meet, which basically is aimed at discussing modalities of making the steel-making processes cleaner and greener, was inaugurated by the technical director of SAIL S.S. Mohanty.
Addressing a gathering of representatives from 35 companies later, Mohanty said that all their mines and plants faced the risk of closure if the steel making process was not made eco-friendly.
“Profits have to be balanced with the social cost for sustainable development. Only an advancement and development in technology can make the Indian steel industry a model for others to follow,” Mohanty said.
A.J. Malhotra, the executive director of SAIL’s corporate planning suggested and called for the recycling and reuse of solid waste products. The generation of a ton of steel, he claimed, generated around six tonnes of solid waste.
Sridhar Vardarajan, the executive director in-charge of SAIL’s RDCIS also stressed on the need for reduced energy consumption and waste generation.
