Scanner on Writers’ absconders

The police have got in touch with the chief minister’s office about three state government employees who are wanted in connection with a cheating case.

The three men — all members of Federation of State Secretariat Employees, a Trinamul-backed union — have been declared absconding since last July though they have been attending office regularly, said sources.

Amitava Maity, Sanjib Pal and Arun Pal — the first two from the chief minister’s office and the last from the finance department — allegedly ran a fraudulent co-operative since 2002, where several of their Writers’ Buildings colleagues had invested. Some of the investors complained that they had failed to give them the promised returns.

Sector V explosion

A sudden explosion followed by a heavy iron object falling on a building in Millennium City in Salt Lake’s Sector V, which houses many offices, sparked fears of a bomb having gone off in the area on Wednesday morning. Police said officials of the Electronic Regional Test Laboratory, which has its office beside Millennium City, were conducting an experiment when an instrument exploded and fell on the terrace of the building. No one was injured.

Shop murder

The body of Sunil Saraf, 45, a jewellery shop owner, was found in his shop in Liluah on Wednesday evening. Saraf was strangled, possibly with his own scarf, which was lying nearby, said a police source.
