Firing denial
Calcutta, Jan. 9: The Birbhum superintendent of police today denied in a report submitted to Calcutta High Court that police had fired on land protesters in Loba on November 6.
“Police only lathi-charged, burst tear-gas shells and fired rubber bullets to disperse the mob… Police didn’t open fire,” the report filed by Murlidhar said.
Malaria report
Calcutta: The high court on Wednesday directed the Calcutta Municipal Corporation to submit a report on its plan to tackle malaria and dengue. The court also sought an update on the construction of a malaria hospital in the city.
Train woes
Calcutta: Thousands of passengers suffered after the Murshidabad-bound Bhagirathi Express developed snags and got held up near Barrackpore for close to two hours from around 7.30pm on Wednesday.
UCO bank fire
Calcutta: A fire broke out in the UCO bank headquarters on Brabourne Road at 10.45am on Wednesday. No injuries were reported and the extent of damage is yet to be ascertained.
