Rise in Kokrajhar bike thefts

Kokrajhar, Jan. 8: Kokrajhar has witnessed a sharp rise in the number of bike theft cases, raising apprehensions among the police and security personnel that the two-wheelers might be used by militants and criminals for subversive activities.

In the past week, five bikes, mostly Pulsars, were stolen from different places of Kokrajhar town.

On Sunday night, a bike was stolen from Bagansali in Kokrajhar ward 7. Before that, a bike was stolen from Tengapara and two from Mwiderkhoro (Kokrajhar ward 8).

A Scooty was also stolen from Bhatarmari. The thefts generally occur after midnight. An officer in Kokrajhar police station admitted to the rise in bike thefts in the past couple of months, more so in the few weeks.

“We are keeping a tight vigil and recovered two bikes recently. Though we are yet to arrest anyone,” he said.

The police suspect a gang is involved.

The rise in the thefts has become a nightmare for most residents having two-wheelers and they expressed resentment and concern over police inaction.

“If such things can happen in the heart of Kokrajhar town and police are clueless, one can imagine how vulnerable the place is,” a resident said.
