Bodo youths’ ‘killers’ arrested

Kokrajhar, Jan. 8: The CBI team today arrested Moinul Haque, former president of All BTC Minority Students Union for his role in the killing of four Bodo youths on July 20 at Joypur in Kokrajhar.

The killing triggered the violence in the district which later spread to lower Assam districts of Chirang and Dhubri killing over 100 people and leaving over 4.5 lakh people homeless.

Two of his associates — Jahanuddin Sheik and Jakhir Ali of Joypur — were also arrested.

The three were suspected to be the main instigators of the attack that killed four youths on the evening of July 20.

They were picked up by the CBI team from Joypur village under Kokrajhar police station this afternoon around 12.30pm in connection with the case registered with the CBI (no.10/2012) for instigating the Joypur killing.

Sources said they are in CBI custody for interrogation and would be produced in Bongaigaon CBI camp court tomorrow. With this, altogether 22 people have been arrested by the CBI in connection with the case. The CBI has earlier arrested five in September, six in December and eight persons on January 5.

The CBI has constituted a 15-member team to probe the violence. The team set up office at Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd complex at Dhaligaon in Chirang district from where it has been conducting investigations into seven cases related to the riots in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) and Dhubri district.

The CBI has taken up the cases, which were earlier registered by Assam police, on the state government's request and after requisite notifications were issued by the Centre. Four of the cases were registered in Kokrajhar district, two in Chirang and one in Dhubri. The CBI registered the cases on August 10.

The source said the CBI would identify the masterminds of the riots and find out whether any external force was involved.
