Railways to hike passenger fares from Jan 21

Kolkata, Jan 9 (agencies): Union Railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal on Wednesday announced a hike in rail fares of Second class and AC class travel and said it has become imperative.

“There will be no fresh increase in rail budget,” Bansal said here while he was non committal on freight tariff hike.

The new fare will be effected from January 21 midnight.

The fare hike of second class ordinary suburban is 2 paise per kilometer and non suburban is 3 paise per km. The second class mail express train fare hike is 4 paise per km and Sleeper is class 6 paise per km, which will come into effect from January 21 midnight.

The hike in AC chair car is 10 paise per kilometre, AC III tier 10 paise per kilometre and first class is 3 paise per kilometre while AC 2 tier is 6 paise per kilometre.
