A sub-tenant in the Bagbazar house where Shubhendu Dutta lived was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the elderly physiotherapist’s death after being allegedly assaulted in a local Trinamul office.
Chhotelal Shaw, the subtenant, lived in a room Dutta had let out eight years ago along with his brothers Gopinath and Vijay and Gopinath’s wife Sulekha. Chhotelal was allegedly in the party office when Dutta went there after being summoned by Bappa Choudhury, the local councillor’s son who wanted to “settle a dispute” between the two families.
Chhotelal has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. His three family members had been arrested earlier. Choudhury, whose mother Manjusree Das is the councillor of ward 7, was also allegedly in the office when Dutta was assaulted. Police have not started a case against him.
“We have arrested all the people whose names the victim’s daughter mentioned in her FIR. Had she mentioned Bappa Choudhury’s name, we would have arrested him,” said a senior police officer.
Two children, both below 10 years old, suffered minor injuries in Kasba’s Rajdanga on Tuesday after they mistook a crude bomb for a ball and started playing with it. They were given first aid in hospital.
