Tamluk, Jan. 8: Traders led by a Trinamul leader in Kolaghat allegedly prevented employees of the state-run power utility from disconnecting supply to 28 shops that need to be demolished for completion of a bridge.
“Pillars can’t be put up on the eastern side of the river because of the shops. We had discussed the issue with the shopkeepers. We had told them that we would help them rebuild their shops after the bridge across the river and over NH6 is complete,” a district official said.
“But a section of Trinamul leaders and supporters are not allowing us to work. They have told us that no shopkeeper can be evicted,” the official added.
Shopkeeper and Trinamul leader Basudeb Roy said he and his fellow-businessmen feared that the place might be “occupied by others if we move out”. “We will not allow the administration to evict us,” he said.
The deadline to complete the bridge is December 2013.
