Raiganj bandh

Raiganj stayed shuttered on Monday, responding to bandh calls by several Opposition parties to protest the shootings in the town.

Shops, schools and banks were shut. The bandh was called to protest the gunning down of Sanjib Bardhan, the owner of a local cable channel, on December 4.

“This continuing violence is not the sign of a healthy society and we, as ordinary people, are scared. The police and the administration should sit up and take notice,” said Suvendu Mukherjee, the headmaster of Raiganj Coronation High School.

The bandh was called by the BJP, Left parties and the Congress. While the other parties called a 12-hour bandh, the Congress demanded a day-long shutdown. “Our party workers had gone out today to request people to observe the bandh, but they had little to do as everything was shut,” Congress MLA Mohit Sengupta said.
