Guwahati, Jan. 7: The Guwahati zonal unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau seized more than 1 quintal ganja and arrested five persons in this connection from Kahilipara yesterday.
An official source today said on the basis of a tip-off, a team of the bureau raided the house of Dipak Das, 40, at Janakpur in Kahilipara and seized the contraband.
“Apart from Das, four others who were present at the house were also arrested,” the source said.
The other four accused were Tiken Das, Sukleswar Das, Akhil Chandra Pathak and Sadhan Deb.
According to the source, during interrogation, the accused revealed that the consignment of high quality Manipuri ganja, weighing around 1.23 quintal, which was bound for Calcutta, was brought to the city from Imphal.
He said 1kg of Manipuri ganja is sold for anything between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000.
“First, the contraband was brought to Nalapara near Beltola and from there it was shifted to Janakpur in two cars — one Chevrolet Beat and one Tata Indica,” he said.
“Two other persons were supposed to take the consignment to Calcutta,” he said.
He said Das is the kingpin of this ganja smuggling racket and he has amassed huge wealth from this trafficking of ganja and other contraband.
“Das owns two houses in the city, one at Janakpur in Kahilipara and another on Mandakini Path at Jatia,” he said.
The source said he was involved in trafficking of ganja for the past six to seven years.
“He was arrested twice earlier for drug trafficking, by CID four years ago and then by Hatigaon police in 2011. At present, he was out on bail,” the source said.
The five accused were produced in the court of chief judicial magistrate, Kamrup, this afternoon and remanded in judicial custody for one day. They will be produced at the court of district and sessions court, Kamrup, tomorrow.
