Guwahati, Jan. 7: The Assam Cricket Association today disqualified a Sivasagar player from the ongoing Umananda Bora Trophy under-13 inter-district cricket tournament here after he was found to be overage.
Danish Ahmed, who had smacked a century in the match against Hailakandi at Barsapara Cricket Stadium on January 3, has been barred by the ACA from further participation after he was found to be overage following a protest by the Nalbari team on the eve of their match against Sivasagar yesterday.
The medical panel of the cricket association had conducted an examination on Danish yesterday and found the player to be over 13 years of age.
The association, however, chose not to take punitive action against the player or the district.
“Danish has been disqualified from the tournament, but no punitive measures like suspension, would be taken against him considering the fact that he still is a youngster and that this was his first tournament,” said Bikash Baruah, secretary of the Assam Cricket Association.
Danish himself had admitted that he was a student of Class X.
ACA sources said the century he scored against Hailakandi would be retained as official as the opposition had not lodged any protest during the match.
The introductory edition of the tournament had resumed on January 3 after it was inaugurated on December 20 only to be suspended the same day following detection of overage players in the participating teams when medical tests were conducted.
A governing body meeting of the ACA on December 25 resolved to continue with the tournament after the district associations took responsibility of sending genuine under-13 players and even conducting medical examinations on the players.
The tournament has been introduced to scout talent to be groomed by the Assam Cricket Academy.
