A large part of central Calcutta was paralysed on Monday afternoon because of two rallies. Vehicles moved at a snailís pace for about three hours in the Sealdah, Moulali, Ganesh Avenue, College Street, MG Road and the Burrabazar areas.
The snarls started to form when a DYFI rally blocked College Street around 2pm. Police said the arterial road remained closed till 5pm because of the gathering by the CPM youth wing.
With College Street blocked, the snarls spread to adjacent roads, such as Jadunath De Street, Nirmal Chandra Street, CR Avenue, Colootollah Street and Surya Sen Street.
The situation worsened when a rally of contractual workers at various medical colleges started a march from Sealdah station. The procession attended by around 400 people wound its way through AJC Bose Road and SN Banerjee Road before ending on Rani Rashmoni Avenue, where a gathering was held.
