Teenager molested from taxi

A 15-year-old girl walking along MG Road to her school was molested by a youth from the back seat of a taxi as the vehicle slowed down beside her.

The girl fell on the road and the taxi sped away before she could recover and note its number. The incident occurred around 6.30am on Monday.

Witnesses said the girl might have been run over as she lay on the carriageway. “Luckily, there was no vehicle behind the taxi,” said a witness.

Several people were on the road then. Most thought that the girl had lost her balance and fallen because the taxi had brushed past her. The taxi was gone by the time she told pedestrians what had happened.

The Class VII student at an English-medium school in Bowbazar was walking towards CR Avenue. The taxi was going in the same direction, said police.

“According to the girl, the taxi almost stopped next to her. Before she could make out what was happening, a youth leaned out of the back seat and groped her. He then pushed her back as the taxi accelerated,” said an officer of Jorasanko police station, where the girl submitted a complaint.

The teenager, a resident of Madan Mohan Burman Street, suffered bruises on her legs after falling down. The police said the taxi left the area before officers at the nearest kiosk, a few metres from the spot where the incident happened, could be alerted.

“If a CCTV camera had been installed at the MG Road-CR Avenue intersection, the registration number of the taxi might have been captured on film, but unfortunately there isn’t any security camera at the junction,” said a senior officer of the traffic department. Currently, CCTV cameras are installed at 36 important crossings in the city.

The girl’s father, who works in a DVD shop at Rajabazar, took her to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for first aid and then to Jorasanko police station. A case of molestation and assault has been started.

Rape arrest

A 16-year-old boy was picked up from his Dhakuria home on Monday on the charge of raping a minor neighbour. The parents of the alleged victim, a 14-year-old deaf and mute girl, said the boy raped her when she had gone to his house on Monday evening. The boy was produced before the juvenile justice board and sent to a children’s home.
