New Delhi: India clinched a sensational 10-run victory in a low-scoring thriller to avoid a series whitewash and restore some pride in the third and final one-dayer against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday.
It made captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni happy.
The following are excerpts:
Mahendra Singh Dhoni: We didn’t start off well… I think a total of 167 wasn’t enough.
But, at the start of the Pakistan innings, I actually told the team that there is no point in looking at the score because the score is not enough…
Instead, we should concentrate on bowling at the right areas because there was something there for the fast bowlers. It was important that we put up a good competition… And that’s what really happened.
I think the vital contribution was from the spinners… Because the way that the Pakistan batsmen were batting, it was clear that they would have gone after the spinners once they were introduced.
So, it was important that they bowl well. The spinners did a great job…
Misbah-ul Haq: The conditions were difficult… The ball was seaming and turning and India bowled really well… Their fielding was outstanding. We tried to see off the new ball and then score runs… But it didn’t happen.
The ball was doing things even after that. It was difficult to score runs.
There were plenty of positives for us… It was great to see the fast bowlers perform. Saeed Ajmal also showed good form. Nasir Jamshed was a revelation. It was a great series… The crowd really enjoyed the match… There was tight competition and the boys fought hard… It was great to win the series.
Nasir Jamshed: The captain and the coach asked me to play freely. I started well today… Unfortunately I couldn’t stay till the end.
It was difficult to score on the pitch in the second innings. There was movement… I tried my best, but could not succeed. I really enjoyed every moment in the series. I enjoy my batting and I’m glad that I could contribute. The crowd has been great… They came in huge numbers...
