Boiled food after oil scare

Balurghat, Jan. 6: Around 30,000 children in 715 ICDS centres in a South Dinajpur block are being given boiled eggs and rice in midday meals since yesterday after around 600 bottles of “adulterated” mustard oil were seized from some of these centres.

“To avoid any health hazards, children are being given boiled eggs and rice. We are helpless as the stock of adulterated oil has been seized,” an ICDS worker in Tapan said.

Last week, frozen mustard oil was seized from these centres, where midday meals were stopped for some days after an order from the BDO, who feared health hazards.

Experts had suggested that mustard oil freezes only at sub-zero temperatures which indicated presence of other components.

The BDO, Bhaskar Ghosh, said the West Bengal Tribal Development Corporation, which supplies food to the ICDS centres, has been informed and fresh stocks of oil will arrive “soon.”
