4 injured after bus falls into ditch

Jan. 6: Four persons were injured after the bus they were travelling in overturned at Hatisila under Pragjyotishpur police station in Kamrup (metropolitan) district around 4pm today.

The city-bound bus was coming from Pobitora wildlife sanctuary.

Nearly 32 passengers were on board when the accident occurred. The bus, carrying a picnic party, set off from Fancy Bazar early this morning.

The revellers were on their way back from the sanctuary when the vehicle overturned and fell into a ditch by the side of the main road at Hatisila.

A few minutes after the accident, paramedics of the 108 Emergency Ambulance Service reached the spot and sent the four injured to GMCH.

“Three of our ambulances were sent to the accident spot as soon as we were informed about the accident. Four persons were wounded and they were taken to the GMCH where they were admitted. We, however, do not know about their condition now,” said an official of ambulance service.

According to police sources, the accident was the driver’s fault. The police could not identify the driver, but they have impounded the bus.

“The bus carrying a picnic party was returning from the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary when it overturned and plunged into a ditch at Hatisila. The driver must have lost control that led to the accident. There is a possibility that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. His whereabouts are unknown. We cannot say if he was among the four injured. The bus is, however, in our custody,” said a police officer of Pragjyotishpur police station.

“The four injured have been taken to GMCH and as far as we know their condition is stable,” he said.

“The number of road accidents involving picnic revellers is increasing. Drink driving is one of the major causes as, at picnics, people serve alcohol to drivers who then lose control over the vehicles they are driving,” said the police official.
