60-year-old man mowed down

A retired state government employee died after a goods carriage hit him near the Sovabazar crossing on Rabindra Sarani around 4.30pm on Sunday. Chandrasekhar Dey, 60, and his niece Debolina Dey, 23, were walking on the pavement when the vehicle hit them. “The duo, residents of Nandaram Sen Street, were taken to hospital where doctors declared Chandrasekhar dead,” said a police officer. Debolina, a college student, was released. The driver was arrested. ilip Saha, 56, died after he was hit by a CSTC bus in Naskarhat, Picnic Garden, on Sunday. Angry residents torched the bus and pelted stones at cops in protest.

Flight diverted

A Delhi-Ranchi Air India flight, with BJP leader Yashwant Sinha among its 164 passengers, was diverted to Calcutta on Sunday. The flight landed in Calcutta around 7pm after it was unable to land in Ranchi because of poor visibility, said an airline official. The flight returned to Delhi with 38 passengers.

Blockade

CPM supporters blocked Jessore Road near the Dakbunglow crossing in Barasat on Sunday for about 30 minutes from 4pm to protest the increasing attacks on party activists. Traffic movement was hit along NH34 and NH35.

Suicide

Class IX student Shreyashi Das, 15, was found hanging in her Baguiati home on Sunday. Shreyashi had quarrelled with her parents, said a cop.

Arrest

Eleven Myanmar residents were arrested in Sealdah on Sunday for allegedly travelling without necessary documents.

Theft

Jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh was stolen from a Chetla house on Sunday. Two relatives of the complainant were arrested in this connection.
