Telecom panel meet

New Delhi, Jan. 6: A high-powered ministerial panel, headed by finance minister P. Chidambaram, is likely to finalise the schedule for the second round of spectrum auction when it meets tomorrow. The empowered group of ministers on telecom is also likely to discuss spectrum sale in the 800MHz band which is used for offering CDMA services.

Power debt

New Delhi, Jan. 6: The first meeting of a central panel to oversee the massive debt rejig scheme for ailing electricity distribution companies (discoms) is likely to be held on January 9. The panel, part of the debt restructuring programme for state-owned discoms, is headed by Planning Commission member B.K. Chaturvedi.

Coal hurdle

New Delhi, Jan. 6: The environment ministry has turned down the coal ministry’s request for grant of “in-principle” clearances to mines identified for auction, raising doubts over proposed competitive bidding for captive blocks.

IKEA date

New Delhi, Jan. 6: The finance ministry is likely to reconsider on January 18 the proposal of Swedish furniture major IKEA for opening cafeterias at its proposed mega retail outlets.

FII inflows

Mumbai, Jan. 6: Overseas investors have pumped in a hefty sum of Rs 4,500 crore in the first week of the new year. During January 1-4, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were gross buyers of shares worth Rs 8,350 crore, while they sold equities amounting to Rs 3,830 crore.
