Kokrajhar, Jan. 5: The CBI today arrested eight more persons in connection with the killing of four Bodo youths on July 20, 2012, at Joypur in Kokrajhar district.
The incident had triggered the BTAD violence, in which over 100 lives were lost and over 4.5 lakh people were rendered homeless.
The CBI, which is investigating the case, made the arrests from Joypur village around 5 this evening.
The bureau had earlier arrested 11 persons in connection with the case — six on December 1 last year and five in September.
Those arrested today have been identified as Maijuddin Akandh, 20, Sahajuddin Sheik, 42, Majamil alias Musa Ali, 20, Abdul Rejjak Akandh, 20, Kalimuddin Sheik, 42, Sahen Ali Mandal, 29, Rafikul Ali Sheik, 30, and Maheen Ali Mandal, 21, all residents of Joypur. They will be produced in court at Bongaigaon tomorrow. The CBI had constituted a 15-member team to probe the violence. The team had set up office on the Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd premises at Dhaligaon in Chirang district from where they have been conducting investigations into seven cases related to the BTAD and Dhubri district riots.
The CBI had taken up the seven cases, earlier registered by Assam police, on the state government’s request. Four of the cases were registered in Kokrajhar district, two in Chirang and one in Dhubri. The CBI registered the cases on August 10.
A source said the bureau would identify the masterminds of the violence and try to find out whether any external force was involved.
