Ranchi, Jan. 5: An explosion in a garbage dump left a young ragpicker with serious injuries in Ranchi this morning.
The incident took place at 10.30am, when Madhukam resident Sudhir Kumar (14) was sorting through a pile of garbage near a culvert at Kantatoli in Lower Bazar police station area. According to sources, the boy opened a plastic box to see if there was anything inside of value, when it exploded.
“The boy started crying for help as he badly hurt his right hand. Being a busy road, passers-by rushed to help the kid, giving him first-aid and then taking him to RIMS. The police were at the spot within 10 minutes,” a vendor requesting anonymity said.
Inspector at Lower Bazar police station Harigovind Das, who visited the spot, confirmed the incident but said the nature of the explosion had left the investigating team bewildered.
“Though an explosion took place and the boy sustained injuries, it is all very mysterious as the police did not find any tell-tale residue of the blast at the spot. As no residue was found, it has become difficult to ascertain the nature of the explosives. We are now taking the help of experts,” he said.
SP (city) Vipul Shukla, who had not visited the spot till 3.30pm as he was busy at the civil court premises expressed concern. He promised to visit the spot to investigate.
Meanwhile, local residents were of the opinion that garbage dumps were easy for criminals and anti-social elements to dispose explosives in.
“Garbage dumps are safe to keep explosives hidden in as the police will never search there. Even if they are found, no one will know who kept it there. A few years ago some children had sustained injuries when they handled bombs kept in a garbage dump,” a resident of Kanta Toli said.
